From 14 July 2010, eBay’s Accepted Payments policy will be revised to include two new accepted safer payment options, giving you an increased range of payment methods to choose from.
The revised policy will require sellers to offer one or more of the following three safer payment methods to buyers:
- PayPal
- Paymate
- Merchant credit card
The change will give both sellers and buyers increased choice among safer payment options.
Increasing the number of accepted payment methods will also help eBay develop an enhanced checkout experience in line with industry best practice.
- More choice and control – Sellers will be able to choose the safer payment option/s that’s right for them
- Enhanced checkout experience – eBay is looking at a number of industry best practice initiatives, like introducing a shopping cart on the site. In order for eBay to do this successfully, sellers need to have the ability to offer several industry standard payment methods
- Feel free to continue offering other acceptable payment methods – There will be no change to other payment methods currently permitted on eBay.com.au
- More information about these accepted safer payment methods can be found on the PayPal and Paymate websites
- Sellers can get more information about offering a merchant credit card from their bank
The revised Accepted Payments policy will not apply to listings in the following categories :
- Cars
- Motorcycles
- Aircraft
- Boats
- Caravans
- Trailers
- Trucks (commercial)
- Services
- Real estate
- Businesses for sale
These exceptions are in place because eBay recommends that buyers purchasing items within these categories should inspect and pay for the items in person.

Increasing the number of accepted safer payment methods will:
- Give both sellers and buyers greater control and choice among safer payment options
- Help eBay develop an enhanced checkout experience in line with industry best practice
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has welcomed eBay’s increased safer payment initiative.
eBay is looking at a number of industry best practice initiatives like introducing a shopping cart on to the site. In order for eBay to do this successfully, sellers need to have the ability to offer more industry standard safe payment methods.
To improve the safer payment options available to buyers, eBay requires all sellers to accept one or more of the following safer payment methods in their listings (with the exception of listings in the categories of cars, motorcycles, aircraft, boats, caravans, trailers, trucks (commercial), services, real estate and businesses for sale):
- PayPal
- Paymate
- Merchant credit card
Bank deposit will remain a payment option for buyers and sellers on eBay. However, eBay does not consider bank deposit a safer payment method and as such it is not one of the required options.
The incidence of something going wrong on eBay is very low. However, when we look at the dispute rate by payment method, bank deposit has a higher incidence of disputes than safer payment methods. Unlike safer payment methods, bank deposit has virtually no recourse in the rare event that something goes wrong.
The introduction of the two new accepted safer payment methods has been discussed with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), and they have welcomed this initiative. Since eBay’s inception in Australia, more than 10 years ago, eBay has had ongoing conversations with the ACCC on improving consumer protection on eBay.com.au.
Nothing will change – you will still need to choose one or more of the required payment methods when selling on eBay.com.au – except that from July, you will be able to choose from an increased selection of required payment options (PayPal, Paymate or merchant credit card).
There will be no change to existing listings. Sellers will simply have the option of offering buyers one or more of the required safer payment methods (PayPal, Paymate or merchant credit card).
There is no cost to buyers when using any of these payment methods on eBay.com.au.
Information about PayPal and Paymate fees are available on the PayPal and Paymate websites.
Merchant credit card fees vary. Sellers can get more information about offering merchant credit card and the fees involved from their bank.
Yes, there is no change to PayPal buyer or seller protection.
In order to offer Paymate as a payment method, you must first register with Paymate and link that account to your eBay account. Read more about Paymate.
- Simply select "Merchant Account - Credit Card" under Safer payment methods when selling directly on eBay.com.au
- If merchant credit card is the only safer payment method you offer, eBay will need to verify your merchant credit card account statement
- Turbo Lister and other API based selling tools will also allow you to offer merchant credit card
Existing selling tools and applications will feature the new payment methods, so you use them as you normally would. If you have multiple listings, you can update them quickly and easily in one hit using the Bulk Edit tool in My eBay or the bulk listing editor function in Turbo Lister and Selling Manager. Learn more about revising your listings and templates.
Offering at least one safer payment method (PayPal, Paymate or merchant credit card) is required, except in a handful of exempt categories:
- Cars
- Motorcycles
- Aircraft
- Boats
- Caravans
- Trailers
- Trucks (commercial)
- Services
- Real estate
- Businesses for sale
Payment policies may differ on other eBay sites. Please check the policy on each of the sites that you list with.
