Product-based search coming to technology categories

On the week commencing 10 October 2011, eBay.com.au will be launching a new buyer experience in search that is focussed on showing products before listings.

About the new product-based buyer experience

In order to make a faster purchasing decision, online buyers expect to be able to find the product they want easily, including the best deals available from sellers who offer excellent service.

That's why, rather than a list of individual items, all search results containing listings from Digital Cameras, Mobile Phones and Apple Laptops will be grouped by product.

To take advantage of the new experience, eBay strongly encourages sellers who list in these three categories to add product details.

How does it work?

  1. Sellers in these categories will need to add a catalogue and fill in product details for their item to be included in the product-based search results

  2. Product-based items in the Digital Cameras, Mobile Phones and Apple Laptops categories will be highlighted and appear above individual listings in search results

  3. When a buyer clicks on the product they are taken to a Product Details Page (PDP) which features information about the product plus listings split by ‘format’ and ‘item condition’

Benefits of listing with a product

  • You’ll save time by being able to add pre-filled product information and stock photos
  • If your item is listed in Digital Cameras, Mobile Phones or Apple Laptops categories, it will feature in the new product-based search results above individual listing results

How to optimise your listings in search results

  • Achieve Top-rated seller status to be eligible for exposure in the Value Box
  • Always list or relist with a matching product (if available) from the catalogue
  • Always include item condition and item specifics in all your listings
  • Offer the most competitively-priced item that you can

4. What happens if I don’t list with a product from the eBay catalogue even though a matching product exists?

Your listing will show in search results pages along with the other listings grouped by product. It won't show on a product page as it hasn't been matched to a particular product in the catalogue.

eBay strongly recommends that where a matching product exists in the catalogue you use it in order to maximise your visibility in search results.

7. The product that matches my item exists in the catalogue, however the product details are incorrect for my listing. What should I do?

If the product details provided by the eBay catalogue are incorrect, you should still list using a matching product from the eBay catalogue, disable the inclusion of product information and clarify the product details in the listing description as usual.
